The owner of a building in a Cumbrian town which has been described as an
"eyesore" has put forward plans to convert it into flats and commercial
units.

If they are approved, nine commercial units and three two-bedroom homes will
be built on the Old Market Hall site in Workington.

It is hoped the development of the Victorian building, which has stood empty
for more than 50 years and was recently named by the council as one of the
top 20 eyesores in the borough, will create more than 30 jobs.

The project is part of the Workington Townscape Heritage Initiative, and
Allerdale Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund and urban regeneration company
West Lakes Renaissance will help cover its costs.

Margaret Jackson, deputy leader of the council and regeneration portfolio
holder, said: "This highlights the council's commitment to tackling eyesore
properties across the borough and demonstrates the importance part-grant
schemes such as the Workington Townscape Heritage Initiative have to play in
our continued regeneration efforts."
