Wakefield Council has revealed that work on a new £24m road linking the south of the town to the A1 is due to start next week.

The council's deputy leader Denise Jeffery will officially unveil the project, which is designed to boost regeneration and help create jobs, on March 11.

The local authority also believes that the five-mile stretch from the Hemsworth Bypass to the A1 at Barnsdale Bar will divert traffic away from residential areas.

Councillor Jeffery said: "I am delighted that work is to start on this long awaited development which will boost the regeneration of the south east of the Wakefield district.

"It will provide a quicker route to the A1 and the motorway network across the country."

She added: "As well as improving the economic prospects for the area, the Hemsworth link road should also help improve road safety and the environment by moving traffic away from urban areas.

"This project is part of the council's commitment to regenerating the whole of the district and creating a cleaner, safer environment for everyone."
