The Government has paved the way for an extension to a £16bn rail scheme
running through London.

Last year, Prime Minister Gordon Brown finally gave the go-ahead for the
Crossrail scheme which will see trains running from Maidenhead, Berkshire,
through central London and as far east as Shenfield in Essex.

But it has now been revealed that the Government is safeguarding additional
land between Maidenhead and the nearby Berkshire town of Reading.

Explaining that there are no plans at present to extend to Reading, rail
minister Tom Harris said safeguarding the land would give "the flexibility
to be able to extend Crossrail in the future, should there be a business
case".

Mr Harris went on: "This safeguarding of the route would also protect the
possibility of undertaking electrification works on the route to Reading,
even without the extension of Crossrail. Again, this keeps this option
available should a decision be taken to electrify the railway beyond
Maidenhead."
