Thousands of people have left London over the last 10 years as soaring house
prices and a desire to live outside the capital encourage homeowners to look
elsewhere.

Some 2.4 million people moved away from London between 1996 and 2006,
leaving the capital with a net loss of 608,000 people due to internal
migration, Halifax said.

But London's population still increased during the period due to one million
people arriving from abroad.

The only other region that saw a net fall in population as a result of
people moving to other regions of the UK was Northern Ireland, where 4,000
more people left the area than moved to it during the 10 year period.

Halifax chief economist Martin Ellis said: "Figures at a local authority
level highlight the transient nature of the population in many of the UK's
major cities.

"Birmingham, for example, recorded both the highest level of immigration and
emigration in England and Wales."
