Bank Votes To Hold Rates At 5.5%

Property investors have been dealt a blow after the Bank of England decided
to keep interest rates on hold at 5.5%.

Landlords with variable buy-to-let mortgages were hoping the nine-strong
Monetary Policy Committee would follow-up December's cut with another
quarter-point reduction.

But policymakers refused to waver despite repeated calls from high street
businesses for further decreases in the cost of borrowing.

The MPC has also come under pressure from falling house prices, with figures
from the Halifax showing the first quarterly dip in values since 2001.
But the MPC is charged with keeping a lid on inflation and its official
benchmark, the Consumer Prices Index, is currently running above target at
2.1%.

Economists believe the decision after the two-day meeting was probably
tight, and many now predict interest rates will fall in February.
