Lending volumes continued to grow in October despite predicted problems in
the housing market, figures have shown.

The Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) found some £33.5bn was advanced in loans during the month, a rise of 9% on the same figures for September and
October last year.

But the group warned that although the data remains strong, most loans are
likely to have been approved before the effects of the global credit crunch
took hold.

It now predicts lending will fall as the problems increase, coupled with
what it calls an "uncertain and slowing" housing market.

The group also claims interest rates will drop more than once next year to
compensate for the credit squeeze, with the cost of borrowing expected to be
trimmed to 5% by the end of 2008.
