The value of the UK's housing stock jumped 9% during 2007 to stand at £4
trillion, Halifax has revealed.

Britain's biggest mortgage lender said the value of homes in the UK has more
than tripled in the last 10 years, rocketing by 208% from the £1.3 trillion
recorded in 1997.

Northern Ireland saw the biggest gains after rising by 404%, followed by
Wales at 223% and the South West at 222%.

Growth has been slowest in Scotland, but even north of the border values
still surged by 184% during the decade.

Halifax chief economist Martin Ellis said: "UK home owners have collectively
accumulated an extra £2 trillion of equity in their homes over the past
decade as property prices have risen.

"This has significantly strengthened the household balance sheet. Mortgage
debt accounts for only 30% of the value of the UK's £4 trillion worth of
housing assets."
