Inflation Remains Above 2% Target

The cost of living in the UK stayed at 2.1% in December, figures from the
Office for National Statistics show.

It is the third successive month that Consumer Prices Index inflation has
been above the Bank of England's target of 2%, and the data will cause
concern among policymakers.

The ONS said that CPI has been under continued pressure from oil prices and
the rising cost of food.

Meanwhile, the Retail Prices Index inflation benchmark, which unlike the CPI
includes mortgage payments, fell from 4.3% to 4% in December.

Global Insight's chief UK economist Howard Archer said the data means that
policymakers will face some uncomfortable decisions over the next few
months.

He said: "Rising utility bills, elevated food prices and a weaker pound will
exert significant upward pressure over the coming months.

"The pace and extent of further rate cuts will therefore depend critically
on inflationary pressures being contained by ongoing wage moderation and by
companies' pricing power being diluted by slowing growth."
