A street in a West Yorkshire town has the cheapest houses in England and Wales with the typical property available for less than £30,000, it has been claimed.

According to property website Mouseprice.com, Oxford Street in South Elmsall is the most affordable street with homes changing hands for an average of just £25,600.

Second place was occupied by Tower Green in the St Hilda’s area of Middlesbrough, which is currently being demolished, with the average home worth £27,400, while third place went to Warwick Street in the South Bank area of the city where the average value of a home is £28,000.

The group said that it had based its research on Land Registry house prices, although it added that the properties in some streets may not have been sold in normal free market conditions, and may have been bought under right-to-buy schemes or as compulsory purchases.
