A new £2m regeneration project has been launched in a bid to boost the fortunes of a west Cumbrian town.

The project, which has been scheduled over six years, is set to regenerate the town of Maryport by adding cycleways and footpaths, as well as links to the town’s attractions. Some £400,000 is set to be spent on a new cycleway that will link the railway station to the town’s new Wave visitors centre. Access to the Maryport Marina will also be improved for residents and visitors to the town.

Similarly, overgrown pathways will be cleared around the Mote Hill area, to allow wheelchair access up to two viewing platforms looking out to sea.

Town councillor Jeff Gardner said: “It is making the town more visitor friendly. I came to Maryport about 10 years ago and there can be no doubt that it has improved considerably since then.”
