New figures showing that more than one in 10 workers at London’s Olympic Park was previously out of work have been welcomed by Prime Minster Gordon Brown.

It was also found that a third of the 2,275 people working on building the park, for the 2012 Olympics, live locally.

And up to 10,000 construction workers will be employed at the height of the contract in 2009/10, the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) said.

Gordon Brown said: "The job figures and the ODA employment and skills strategy show that the construction of the site can be the catalyst for lasting social and economic change."

Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell said: "Everyone understands the physical legacy from hosting the Games in 2012 - new sports facilities, a new urban park and new homes.

“But just as important is the legacy for thousands of people who will acquire skills enabling them to get jobs in the Olympic Park and then work for the rest of their lives."
