A £12m plan to tackle congestion on Canvey Island in Essex has been given the green light.

Essex County Council announced it is backing the move, which will see the Government fund £11.13m to extend Roscommon Way with a new stretch of dual carriageway.

Councillor Norman Hume said: "We have listened to the concerns of residents and businesses in the consultations on the Roscommon Way extension and have enacted the changes they wanted to see.

"This project, together with work to upgrade the junction at Sadlers Farm, will significantly help in the regeneration of Canvey Island with commitments for nearly £80m of investment to improving road links on the island; more per head of population than anywhere else in Essex."

Essex County Council said it was "committed to maximising existing traffic flows" on the island's roads, especially along Canvey Way where recent accidents have caused delays.
