Buy-to-let landlords face "significant" risks and can lose their investments
in Spain because they fail to prepare properly, new research claims.

The University of Portsmouth's business school found many investors lack
basic skills such as a knowledge of the language.

Expatriates are also leaving themselves open to problems by failing to
understand the different employment and business regulations in the country.
The research shows new arrivals are also being targeted by con artists, with
many people falling victim to fraudsters from their own country.

Laura Wilson-Edwardes from the university said: "We quickly found British
entrepreneurs who had lost everything on failed business ventures.
"Conmen seem quick to befriend and defraud vulnerable would-be entrepreneurs with bogus business opportunities.

"Those arriving in Spain cash-rich from the sale of their homes in the UK
should be particularly alert to this possibility."
