The Government has announced it is to examine the problems faced by
buy-to-let investors.

The review of the private rented sector will also look at the issues facing
tenants, and what measures are working successfully.

Housing minister Yvette Cooper said the move will assess the quality of
homes available to rent and who is using them.

Around 2.6 million homes in England are currently rented from more than half
a million private landlords.

But Citizens Advice last year claimed 20% of tenants were dissatisfied with
the standard of repairs, while landlords also have to put up with late rent
payments and anti-social behaviour.

Ms Cooper said: "Most of us have rented a flat or house at some stage in our
lives and the private rented sector is, at its best, a vital provider of
good housing.

"But too few people are aware of their rights and responsibilities, either
as tenants or landlords.

"We have seen a big increase in the private rented sector and particularly
in buy-to-let. It is important we review the impact of this."
